Finding Him in the Little Things

"Pray without ceasing" 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

What does this mean? Well to pray is to be in communion with God. So, you could say to pray without ceasing is to be constantly with the Lord. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Paul tells us how we can truly do this through his writing "do not put out the spirit's fire." So, how do we do this? How do we keep the Holy Spirit's flame alive?

We could, like Therese of Lisieux, make little sacrifices every day and in this way glorify God. Following St. Therese's thought it could be as simple as inviting God into our everyday lives. This is something that I have been working on, finding ways to let God into my day to day life. For example, over the past few days, I have regularly attended yoga class. Those of you who do or have done yoga will know that most teachers like to end their classes in Shavasana, a pose in which you lie on your back with your arms by your sides, palms facing up. In this pose you are supposed to clear your mind, letting your thoughts come and go like the waves.

Today as I lay in this total surrender I invited to Lord to come to me. My heart rate began to quicken where it would normally slow to a steady beat, I felt Gods presence, I felt his love and patience. In that moment I understood what it meant to truly let the Lord into your life, all the parts of your life, not just select pieces. I wanted to stay in that place of peace, where I could feel Gods love all around me. Of course, the class ended and with it the moment. But I was not, as I had feared, left feeling empty or lost. Instead, I was lifted up, I had ignited the spiritual flame inside me. I found that, when you search for the Lord in everything that you do, big or small, it helps to keep that spiritual fire ablaze.
